Suzanne是誰? 他的女朋友嗎? 她是因為飛機事故死的嗎? James Taylor 並沒有多做解釋。 有一個版本是有一群朋友替Suzanne；James Taylor 的女朋友安排一趟行程去找James Taylor，但是很不幸的飛機在旅途中發生事故墜毀了(Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground.)，Suzanne朋友的計畫斷送了James Taylor女朋友的性命(Suzanne the plans they made put an end to you)。 即使我沒聽過有關這首歌的故事，我也一直以為Suzanne在探往James Taylor的旅途中因為飛機事故死了而在她搭乘飛機以前還打了一通很長的電話 (there's hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things to come) 。
但這首歌背後真正的故事，其實也蠻特別的…..。 Suzanne是James Taylor 住進精神病院而認識的一位病友，他跟她有許多相同的夢想跟興趣，但在James Taylor離開病院不久後她自殺了。 James Taylor的朋友為了怕他得知這惡耗而做出一些傻事所以暫時沒有跟他說。 最後flying machine in pieces on the ground 是指James Taylor 所組的團體”The Flying Machine” 因為James Taylor的藥物問題在1967年解散了。
